A little bit about Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a local Edinburgh charity providing much needed practical and social support to people who have previously been homeless, enabling them to settle into their new homes and take steps towards supporting themselves and their families.
Every year Fresh Start assists thousands of Edinburgh residents – individuals, couples and families – in making a home for themselves. Some of the amazing services provided by Fresh Start include:
Training Courses Unemployment is one of the biggest issues facing those who have previously been homeless. Fresh Start have their own Training Initiative giving their clients the opportunity to gain new skills, work experience and SQA qualifications.
Hit Squads Teams of Fresh Start volunteers work with new tenants to decorate two rooms, helping to make their new house a home.
Starter Packs Many previously homeless people going into their first tenancy have no material possessions. Fresh Start provide starter packs – including pots and pans, cutlery, crockery, bedding and toiletries – to help their clients get onto their feet and settled into their home.
Cooking Classes Fresh Start clients can take part in regular cooking classes where they learn nutritious recipes and how to plan healthy meals on a budget. There is also a Growing Space where clients and volunteers grow fruits and vegetables to be used in cooking classes, any surplus produce is donated to local food banks.
How we are getting involved
As you can see above, Fresh Start are doing great work in supporting previously homeless households across the city. Everyone at Clan Gordon was keen to get involved so we have implemented an ongoing campaign to donate goods to Fresh Start starter packs, and will be taking part in a fundraising run in December where we have a target of raising £1,500.
Edinburgh Christmas 10k
The whole Clan Gordon team (except for Kim who has been excused as she will be celebrating a very special birthday!) has signed up to run the Edinburgh Christmas 10k on Saturday 4th December. Most of us have never run a 10k before (or run at all) but we are looking forward to the challenge and raising funds for Fresh Start's 'Cookers for Christmas' appeal in the process.
How you can help
As a charity, Fresh Start relies on donations – financial, goods, and volunteer hours – to enable them to continue helping as many clients as possible.
At Clan Gordon we have committed to donating to Fresh Starts starter packs on an ongoing basis and are encouraging our landlords and tenants to get involved by passing on any unwanted items from their Edinburgh lettings property.
Items for the starter packs can be second hand but MUST be in good condition. If you would like to donate we can pass on any of the following items to Fresh Start:
- Pots & pans
- Mugs and glasses
- Kitchen utensils
- Small electrical appliances
